Movie

Religiously themed movies particularly annoy me. None more than this disgusting sum of money brought into a church. Actors, catering, and so on were free to them. I haven’t seen the movie, but judging from Cameron’s previous acting abilities, I’ll go with “it sucks.” That and the review on Rotten Tomatoes seems rather skinny when compared to movies opening TODAY. Even “Ballast” which was only a very limited opening, managed more than 11 reviews (at the time I saw it). I’d really like to know who is getting all the money made on this movie. I mean, the actors weren’t paid, catering was free, they have no real bills to speak of. Where does this money go? Well, of course, it goes to their church. The Sherwood Baptist Church, in Albany, GA to be specific. They want to build a “Sports Park” which normally wouldn’t cost $8 million as it is only 82 acres or 600×600 meters. That’s not exactly a tiny park. It will have horses, a fishing pond, and is supposed to be open to the public. That part I have no problem with. In fact, I encourage churches that have millions of dollars just hanging around to spend it on charitable things. The problem comes in when they are also taking millions on a 110 ft. tall cross to be located on the same land. If this park is really “open to the community” as they say it is, why put the huge cross up? Ninety thousand pounds of steel? That’s 45 tons of steel. To give you an estimate of how much steel that is, a ton of unformed steel is about $1000, that’s $45k just for the raw material if you use it 100% efficiently with no waste. There’s also the problem of making it, but let’s say they get a really nice company to do it for FREE. Let’s look out how you’d stand up a structure that large. Considering standing up something this heavy and tall requires crane with at least a 200 ft. boom. That leaves most truck mounted cranes out of the picture with a few exceptions, each costing in the thousands of dollars per day. So you’re looking at a bare minimum cost of $50k if they get all labor for free. Working with this much steel, however, I can’t see any company donating that much time free of charge. Anyway, so this church gets a small percentage of the profit from this film, right? Five percent of $8million is still a nice chunk of tax-free change to build a cross (likely the largest percentage of money goes to this). In any case, let’s look at the costs for horse stables, tennis courts, soccer fields, and so on.

They owned the land already=free

Tennis courts: $40k each for really fancy tennis courts.

Soccer fields: $20k each

Horse barn kit: $80k Remember, they get free labor frequently

Pond: $3k for equipment rental

So, in total, you’re looking at a $100,000 investment from a movie that made over $8million, cost to run a movie theater is negligible. Most films get 20-30% of the theater’s profit, so you figure that’s at least $3million. Where, may I ask, is the rest of this money going? The math just doesn’t add up…
