Why do we think in narratives? It seems that narratives, on the whole, are how we perceive the world. Why?
Well, everything is a story.
Possibly because we evolved visual pattern recognition long before we developed written language. Pictographic memories probably fit well into narrative format.
Darn it Pliney! I was sitting here pondering the question in a narrative fashion – and then along came your comment and halted my daydreaming in it’s tracks!
DoH! Once again, why I rarely get invited to parties.
To see events as organized into a narrative is an often useful illusion. It allows us, for instance, to make plans and execute them.
I think it is partially because we are all so narcissistic, we all are the center of our own universes and thus are can afford to narrate ourselves
not really narcissistic, though many people are… but natural. narcissism is a different thing.
