I’m going to be sending this page to people every time I get an invitation to join a cause such as “put Christ back in Christmas” or “Keep Jesus in Schools” or any other such nonsense.
Under any section of “about me” or “information” or any other page which provides a summary of myself, you will undoubtedly notice my religious views, since so many of these sites request them and because it’s generally one of the first questions I get. Here’s the deal:
In short, I am not a religious adherent of any particular supernatural belief. I openly think these beliefs are harmful to both society and the individual, as such, am a self described “antitheist.” I can also present instances and evidence where the beliefs were DIRECTLY responsible for injury, death, war, hostility, human rights abuses, and the like. This means that rather than supporting your “cause” which which has anything to do with your unsubstantiated belief in an invisible, undetectable, magical, and interventionist deity, I am more likely to find the cause which opposes it. If you would like to have a discussion about my beliefs, I will gladly discuss them with you. If you don’t want your beliefs questioned, your “evidence” to be deconstructed and looked at under the lens of research, science, and skepticism, do not engage in this. I will not go out of my way to offend you, but I will not go out of my way to avoid offense.
Here is a list of things which I would require a high degree of convincing:
Any cause or organization whose goal is to limit human rights in any way
Any cause or organization whose goal is to allow your specific supernatural beliefs into the public sphere
Any cause or organization which considers a fetus a baby
Any cause or organization which considers marriage a religious act
Any cause or organization which would allow your or any unsubstantiated beliefs preference over others
Any cause or organization which is “based upon the Bible, Qur’an, Torah, Bhagavad Gita, any of the Sutras, Dianetics, the Nihon Shoki, or any other religious text”
Things I will support:
Any secular cause or organization whose goal is to explain why many religious beliefs are incorrect.
Any secular cause or organization which seeks to make life more comfortable for those struggling.
Any secular cause or organization which helps the impoverished.
Any secular cause or organization which does not feed lies to the uninformed.
Any secular cause or organization whose goal is to teach the public valuable skills and information.
Any secular cause or organization which desires only the free and open exchange and criticisms of ideas.
