In response to this lovely little “snake with a leg” in the news, I’ve decided to post something on what snakes eat.
Since they can’t chew or tear food, and can frequently kill animals they are incapable of swallowing without causing severe damage, they frequently try anyway. A few of the organisms snakes will eat can be larger than the stomach of the snake and stretch the animal beyond the breaking point. While these events are often fatal for both animals, some do survive and end up with the large tumor-like growth (scar tissue) around the wound. Very rarely will the animal survive and, to my knowledge, none have yet been discovered while still alive. Even if this animal does prove to be either case, it is still fascinating in that, if it is a case of overeating, the snake 1) survivied and 2) was still fairly healthy.
